Kidd Chris Returns Next Week...Sort Of

For you Philadelphians that follow this blog, check out Kidd Chris's web site. Apparently, Kidd is on a comeback and will be doing a show over the Internet beginning May 26, 2009.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Kidd Chris Show, they were taken off the air just over a year ago when one of his regular guests, Lady Gash, played one of her more racist songs over the air waves. Here's a link to a news article about the firing, and embedded in the article is a link to the You Tube clip with the song. DO NOT listen to it if you are easily, or even not-so-easily, offended.

I miss the Kidd Chris Show because it was so unlike the other morning zoo shows out there. The comedy was no-holds barred, nothing is sacred, sort of stuff, and the rogues gallery of guests was great. Sure they went too far on many occasions, but that's what I liked about them. Being un-PC was their sacred calling.

Brian,

To be honest, I could never listen to him for very long because I couldn't stomach the way he laughs.

Though, if he's really that un-PC, I might have to give him a second chance.

Nate,

No man, I hear what you're saying. Kidd Chris has one of the most annoying laughs I've ever heard. I just got used to hearing it so I was able to tune it out eventually.

I wasn't able to hook up to the actual show, so I don't really know what the uproar was about. And although on one level I don't know where I stand on racist or any other kind of inflammatory speech, on a deeper level, I guess I'm more for free speech than suppression of it. Give the devil his due, or something like that. I do think it's better to have your enemy out in the open.

whatever happened to Howard Stern? Since he went to satellite he seems to have completely fallen off the radar. I never hear anything about him anymore. I assume he's still alive but who knows?

Seana,

Kidd and co. definitely crossed a lot of lines while they were briefly on the air, but that was part of the appeal. Their edge was a nice counterpoint to the more vanilla-bland morning zoo shows out there.

I also don't think they were being racist, even though they were airing racist humor. I saw their comedy more in the vein of Blazing Saddles. But obviously the executives didn't see it that way. Live and die by the sword, as they say.

Adrian,

He's still doing the satellite thing, but that's all I really know. Were you a fan when you were in NYC? If you were, you might have heard Kidd Chris calling in/appearing.

It's funny but it always seemed like the people running the FCC had a personal agenda when it came to Stern, not unlike Senator Brewster did when it came to Howard Hughes.

I know a local columnist who was kicked out of one paper venue after another, not for racist remarks, but because he had the habit of saying something that offended the powers that be, and threatened to pull advertising or whatever. He wasn't racist, but he wasn't always right, either. Anyway, now his column is a blog, and his fans do find him there, but it isn't the same thing at all to have just your fans dutifully looking you up as it is to have random strangers happen upon your stuff while they are looking at something quite different. On the other hand, an actual show always has the possibility of going viral, so Kidd Chris may actually end up with a larger audience.

Seana,

What's the guy's name? Got a link?

BTW, are you finished with the move? How did it go?

Bruce Bratton. The link is Bratton Online. It's pretty local, though I see he's waded right into a current hot topic in the first paragraph. I guess he can't get fired from his own blog though.

Yep, the move is done, went well and I'm happy, apart from the enormous pile of junk (mine) sitting right in the middle of my current studio, which I hope I will deal with in some reasonably timely way. Thanks for asking.

Seana,

Congrats on the move. If it's any consolation, we bought our house a little over three years ago, and there's still boxes in the attic we haven't opened.

And thanks for the link, I'll definitely check this out.
